You are powerful, and you help shape the future for those who might not have to fight the same battles.

After an early childhood in an all-black area, I found myself as a youth/young adult in the position, like it or not, of representing black people in a mostly white neighborhood and school. I knew some people's perceptions would be formed by how I showed up. Knowing that could affect the treatment of others who would come after was not necessarily my responsibility, but I felt better knowing that being smart, taking part in programs that fit my talents (music, theatre), and making friends of all races played a small part in paving the way for others.

Coming out as gay in my 20's, this same philosophy served me through my early work life. And many years later, I was thrilled to learn that a gay black guy became the class president at my old high school. Fully embrace who you are. And while we're still fighting for justice and equality, be aware of how your presence helps move the needle toward future progress. Let your outside-the-box life be an advantage in developing the artistic, creative, scientific, and social advancements society doesn't even know it needs.

If I were to change anything, it would be to open myself to opportunities I would normally consider outside my comfort zone. So much of life's joy and purpose comes from the unexpected. And having a feeling of purpose makes the inevitable struggles much more bearable. Always, always make room for joy, love, and laughter, and never stop learning and sharing.
