Are you in support of declaring Pride Proclamations and raising the Pride flag during June in your City once elected?
Absolutely. I’d love to see the students request this rather than as a directive exclusively from the board. I believe such a request has already occurred and been honored. I hope to promote an inclusive environment where students feel comfortable coming to the board with such requests. The board’s role is to support the students, all of the students.
In the past few years, books that inform youth in their appropriate age around race, gender, and history of Civil Rights have been banned, censured, and scrutinized. Do you support our librarians to continue the valuable education they provide our community and reject the notion of book banning?
I completely support our schools and librarians in their expertise to select curriculum and supplemental materials for the students. Books should not only be used to be “mirrors” of ourselves, but also “windows” into the lives of others. With recent legislation and by educating teachers around their rights/expectations, we can make sure that our teachers feel supported and confident in using such materials when deemed applicable to their teaching. I do not support, condone, nor recommend anyone banning, censuring, or scrutinizing books for any child except for their own.
In California, outing an LGBTQI+ student to their parents is against the law as passed in July 2024, effective in January 2025. Would you advocate for a school district to uphold California law AB 1955: The SAFETY Act to protect the safety and privacy of our LGBTQI+ youth?
I would not only support, but also actively advocate for upholding the SAFETY Act. Students cannot thrive academically if they do not feel secure. Trust is crucial in the teacher-student relationship, and for many students, classrooms serve as their 'safe places.' While teachers often take on various roles, they are not qualified to act as social workers or counselors. Decisions affecting students and their families should not be made by teachers unless the safety of the child is at risk.
Gender Affirming Care is the science that support transgender people in their journey of self-determination. However, because of false and hateful narratives, Gender Affirming Care has been under attack in many states and even in our region. Would you advocate for our transgender students/families and in favor of Gender Affirming Care to ensure that mental health and clinical services continue to be offered to everyone?
Absolutely. I’d love to see the students request this rather than as a directive exclusively from the board. I believe such a request has already occurred and been honored. I hope to promote an inclusive environment where students feel comfortable coming to the board with such requests. The board’s role is to support the students, all of the students.
