Call For Volunteers
Project Youth is a North County LGBTQ Resource Center committee comprised of a group of volunteers dedicated to creating safe, inclusive services and programs for our LGBTQ and allied youth in North County, San Diego. We collaborate with North County schools as well as with organizations such as the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Educational Network (GLSEN) and the Gay-Straight Alliance Network, to provide education and resources that will help overcome ignorance, bias, harassment and violence directed at youth that identify as LGBTQ.
One of our primary roles has been to support Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) clubs in schools throughout North County. We were the first organization in San Diego to create an annual GSA Awards. In 2011, our fourth GSA Awards, twelve GSA’s were presented with a monetary award and a certificate of appreciation for their efforts to end discrimination, harassment and bullying in their schools and create an inclusive culture that is accepting and safe for all students.
Other Project Youth events include Open Mic and Youth Socials, barbecues at the beach, and an annual GSA Leadership Summit, among others. We also provide speakers to GSA Clubs to share their personal and professional stories. Additionally, the Resource Center provides a home for “Our Circle,” a weekly support group for 14 – 24 year olds.
Working with Project Youth has been very rewarding for the volunteers involved. We are growing fast and can use your help. Volunteers are needed in a variety of areas – events coordination, web-site content development, social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter), fundraising, data collection, program development, networking with other organizations, and more. If you or someone you know is interested in joining Project Youth, please give me a call. There is plenty to do and whatever time you may be able to contribute will be very much appreciated.
